David Ernest Stansfield



David Ernest Stansfield Born 18th June, 1891 in Sunderland, Co. Durham he spent his childhood in the district of Millfield, Sunderland. When he left school he worked in a solicitors' office until he went to work for the Black brothers at the cinema at Monkwearmouth, and from then he became cinema manager at various cinemas in the area. He married three times, first to Gertrude Smith in 1916 and they had: Gordon Christian born 1917 in Sunderland. Gertrude died in 1918 and David's parents looked after Gordon until he married again to Matilda Graham 16th August, 1924 at Holy Trinity Church, Southwick, Sunderland. They had: Raymond David 13th June, 1925; and June Mildred 4th June, 1928. Unfortunately this marriage did not work out and they divorced in 1949. David then married Lily Cuthbertson in 1953 and Ian David was born 5th April, 1954 when David was 62 years old. He died 2nd January, 1959 at Wallsend, Northumberland of cancer.

William George Stansfield Born 28th November, 1866 at Jarrow, Co. Durham, he came to Sunderland at about 4 years old and spent the rest of his life in Millfield. He married 31st December, 1890 to Margaret Hannah Smith at St. Mark's Church, Millfield, Sunderland and they had: David Ernest born 1891; William George born 1892; Mabel born 1893; Percy born 1895; Hilda born 1896; Laura born 1897; Gladys born 1901; and Minnie born 1904 (all at Millfield, Sunderland). William George was a plater in a shipyard all his working life. He was a church warden at St. Hilda's Church and he liked football. He died 1938 in hospital and was buried at Bishopwearmouth Cemetery, Sunderland.

Medomsley Street

Thomas Stansfield Born 2nd April, 1834 I understand, in the Manchester area. He was a journeyman blacksmith, but worked in the shipyards as an angle iron smith/frame turner. He married Mary Ann Foster Maule 28th June, 1859 at the United Presbyterian Church, Jarrow, Co. Durham and they had: Elizabeth Ann Healey born 1860 Jarrow; Jane Healey born 1861 Willington Quay; Thomas Foster born 1863 Millwall, London; Mary Ann Foster born 1865 Willington Quay; William George born 1866 Jarrow; Mary Ann born 1868 Stockton; Elizabeth Eleanor born 1870 Sunderland; Ellen Elizabeth born 1872 Sunderland; John Healey born 1874 Sunderland; Harriet Seddon born 1877 Sunderland; and Joseph David Lionel born 1879 Sunderland. The last four children being born in Medomsley Street (left). From about 1870 the family lived in Millfield, Sunderland. Thomas had a sister Jane who married Joseph Tinkler and they also lived at Millfield, but did not have any children. Thomas died July, 1882 and is buried at Bishopwearmouth Cemetery, Sunderland.

Alnwick Church

Mary Ann Foster Maule Born 14th April, 1840 in Alnwick, Northumberland, daughter of George Maule a journeyman joiner/cabinet maker. The family moved to Darlington soon after she was born and then Stanhope before settling in Jarrow, Co. Durham when Mary was a young teenager. Quite a few members of George Maule's family were in Jarrow at the time including his mother (a little old lady with roses in her back yard). Mary married Thomas Stansfield 28th June, 1859 at the United Presbyterian Church, Jarrow, Co. Durham and they had: Elizabeth Ann Healey born 1860 Jarrow; Jane Healey born 1861 Willington Quay; Thomas Foster born 1863 Millwall, London; Mary Ann Foster born 1865 Willington Quay; William George born 1866 Jarrow; Mary Ann born 1868 Stockton; Elizabeth Eleanor born 1870 Sunderland; Ellen Elizabeth born 1872 Sunderland; John Healey born 1874 Sunderland; Harriet Seddon born 1877 Sunderland; and Joseph David Lionel born 1879 Sunderland. Margaret Hannah SmithBorn 16th January, 1870 in Sunderland. She grew up living in Millfield, Sunderland all her life. She married William George Stansfield 31st December, 1890 at St. Mark's Church, Millfield, Sunderland and their children were all born in Millfield. They had: David Ernest born 1891; William George born 1892; Mabel born 1893; Percy born 1895; Hilda born 1896; Laura born 1897; Gladys born 1901; and Minnie born 1904. Four of her children died, Hilda and Laura never married and Minnie emigrated to Australia. She was known as Maggie, but when her husband was annoyed with her he would call her Margaret Hannah. She died May, 1951 and is buried at Bishopwearmouth Cemetery, Sunderland.

Bishopwearmouth Church

George Henry Smith Born 8th August, 1843 in Sunderland Centre, where he lived all his life. Son of George Smith a shipwright, George became a journeyman butcher. His grandfather on his mother's side was a German, Johan Hinrick Schroder, born Hamburg in the 1770s and he changed his name to John Henry Shrouder. George Henry married Hannah Wilson 15th April, 1863 at St. Thomas' Church, Sunderland and had: George born 1863; Mary Jane born 1866; William born 1868; Margaret Hannah born 1870; Elizabeth Ann born 1871; George Henry born 1874; William Robert born 1879; and George H. born about 1881 - all in Sunderland. George Henry died January 1882 aged 38, and is buried at Bishopwearmouth Cemetery, Sunderland. Continue to George Henry Smith's family sheet.

19 Gilsland Street

Hannah Wilson Born 28th April, 1843 at Monkwearmouth, Sunderland. Her mother died when she was only 8. She married George Henry Smith 15th April, 1863 at St. Thomas' Church, Sunderland and had: George born 1863; Mary Jane born 1866; William born 1868; Margaret Hannah born 1870; Elizabeth Ann born 1871; George Henry born 1874; William Robert born 1879; and George H. born about 1881 - all in Sunderland. She lived at 19 Gilsland Street (opposite) from about 1873 until she died December, 1898 and is buried at Bishopwearmouth Cemetery, Sunderland. Continue to Hannah Wilson's family sheet.
