Thomas Frederick Brindley



Thomas Frederick Brindley Born 28th January, 1892 at New Town, Ifield, Sussex. I believe he lived at some time in his childhood in Boosbeck, near Skelton, Yorkshire before moving to Horden in the early 1900s when Horden Colliery was sunk. He worked for Horden and Blackhall Collieries rising to Deputy Manager. He married Violet Scott on 27th January, 1923 at The Register Office at Easington, Co. Durham, and had two sons: Frank born 22nd February, 1923; and Harry born in 1929 (Harry died of diphtheria in 1935, aged only 6). He was interested in cricket and he played the piano. He died 18th October 1946 at Blackhall, Co. Durham of lung cancer.

132 Third Street, Horden

Francis Brindley Born 23rd March, 1858 at 16 Moorgate Street, Sunderland. He was known as Frank and he was a grocer in his young days. He married Hannah Mary Colley on 29th May, 1882 at All Saint's Church, Skelton, Yorkshire. They had three known children: Mary Jane (known as Jennie) born 3rd December, 1882 at Boosbeck, Skelton, Yorkshire; Francis Alfred (known as Alf) in 1887 at Edmonton, nr. London; and Thomas Frederick (known as Tom) on 28th January, 1892 at New Town, Ifield. I understand he lived at Boosbeck again for a time, but moved to 33 in the early 1900s when Horden Colliery was sunk and took a job as Colliery Weighman. He lived at 132 Third Street, which was classed as a Colliery Officials House where he died 23rd April, 1921.

Thomas Brindley Born about 1830/31 at Birkenhead, Cheshire. He then grew up in the potteries of Staffordshire where his father worked as a potter. About 1840 the family moved to Thornaby to work at the pottery in Thornaby, where the whole family were trained in the pottery industry. On 31st October, 1852 he married Jane Kelly in the Register Office in Newcastle and they had: William Kelly, born 1854 at Newcastle; Elizabeth Jane born 1856 in Newcastle; and Francis, born 23rd March, 1858 in Sunderland. Thomas was at that time a potter at Garrison Pottery, Sunderland. Thomas died of bronchitis on 11th February, 1889 and was buried at St. Michael's Church, Bishopwearmouth, Sunderland. Briery Vale Villas

Jane Kelly Born 18th March, 1815 at Blackhillock, Rafford, Moray, Scotland, she then grew up in Newcastle. She lived with her brother and sister in Newcastle where she worked as a timekeeper at a pottery. When she married Thomas Brindley (aged about 21) on 31st October, 1852, at the Register Office in Newcastle, she was 37 years old but lied about her age and said she was 26 on the marriage certificate. They had: William Kelly, born 1854 at Newcastle; Elizabeth Jane born 1856 in Newcastle; and Francis, born 23rd March, 1858 in Sunderland. She went on to outlive her younger husband, and died two years after him, on 23rd March, 1891 at Briery Vale Villas, Sunderland, of cardiac failure and hemiphegia. Skelton Church

Hannah Mary Colley Born 1861 at Aby Green Farm, Harum Yorkshire she lived her first years on her parents' farm. Her father died and her mother remarried James Pentland, an iron worker and then the family moved to Guisborough with James. In 1891 her mother and sister were living at Boosbeck, Yorkshire with James. Her brother Robert Belwood Colley lived with his family at Boosbeck and at some point about that time her brother William had the pub there. She married Francis Brindley on 29th May, 1882 at All Saint's Church, Skelton, Yorkshire and they had three known children: Mary Jane (known as Jennie) born 3rd December, 1882 at Boosbeck, Skelton, Yorkshire; Francis Alfred (known as Alf) in 1887 at Edmonton, nr. London; and Thomas Frederick (known as Tom) on 28th January, 1892 at New Town, Ifield. Hannah Mary died of cancer of the stomach at Horden, Co. Durham on 8th January, 1925.

Aby Green Farm

William Colley Born 13th March, 1809 at Sproxton, Yorkshire, he grew up on his parents' farm at Harum, Yorkshire. He married late (45 years old) to Hannah Baker on 1st June, 1854 at All Saint's Church, Helmsley. Hannah had already had a son called William Colley Baker in 1853. They then had other children all born at the Farm - Aby Green: John in 1855; Thomas in 1856; Robert Belwood in 1857; Sarah Jane in 1859; and Hannah Mary in 1861. The adjoining farm was William's parents' farm - Ings. William died sometime before 1881. Continue to William Colley's family sheet.

55 High Street, Boosbeck

Hannah Baker Born at Carlton in 1829, the oldest child of Robert Baker and Jane Ransom. She spent her childhood at Gillimoor where her brothers and sister was born. Hannah had an illigitimate son born at Fadmoor called William Colley Baker before marrying William Colley 1st June, 1854 at All Saint's Church, Helmsley and going to live on his farm - Aby Green. They then had other children all born at Aby Green: John in 1855; Thomas in 1856; Robert Belwood in 1857; Sarah Jane in 1859; and Hannah Mary in 1861. After William died Hannah married James Pentland, an Iron Worker, and lived at Guisborough and then 55 High Street, Boosbeck with him. William and Hannah's daughter Sarah Jane lived the rest of her life at Boosbeck, and my father was taken by his Auntie Jenny to visit Auntie Jenny's 'Auntie Jenny'.
