The Family Sheet of


Violet Scott



Violet Scott Born 14th January, 1901 at Etherley Moor, Co. Durham, she moved to Horden as a young child when Horden Colliery was sunk, so she spent most of her childhood at Horden. She was the baby of the family, having three older brothers and an older sister. She was known throughout her life as Vi. She married Thomas Frederick Brindley on 27th January, 1923 at the Register Office, Easington and they had two sons: Frank born 22nd February, 1923 at Horden; and Harry born 1929 at Blackhall (Harry died of diphtheria in 1935 aged only 6). She lived to be 94 years old and died in Langley House Residential Home at Horden on 28th May, 1995.

Etherley Moor

George Scott Born 4th January, 1856 at Coxhoe Hill in the parish of Kelloe, Co. Durham. He had only one half brother, Thomas, who was 9 years older than him. His mother died when George was only 3 and he was looked after by his father's third wife. He became a coal miner like all his family and he married Ann Mason 15th September, 1888 at The Register Office, Durham. They had five children: Mark born 12th December, 1888 at Cornforth; George born 14th September, 1890 at Witton Gilbert; John William (Jack) born 8th September, 1892 at Witton Gilbert; Rosina (Rose) born 3rd April, 1897 at Etherley Moor; and Violet (Vi) born 14th January, 1901 at Etherley Moor. He moved to Horden in the early 1900s when Horden Colliery was sunk, where George and his three sons found work. He was described by my grandmother as a quiet, gentle man. He died 29th January, 1913 in Horden of pleurisy.

Newburn Church

Mark Scott Born at Wallbottle Quarries, Northumberland and baptised 6th February, 1825 at St. Michael and All Angel's Church, Newburn, he was the oldest living child of a large mining family. He lived his first years at Wallbottle Quarries, and then the family moved to the Durham coalfield around Thornley/Coxhoe/Quarrington Hill. He became a miner also and at one time was a deputy overman. He married Mary Lawrison in 1846 at Kelloe, and had: Thomas born 1847, Quarrington Hill. Mary died 1854 and he married Eleanor Taylor 26th March, 1855 at the Register Office, Durham and had: George born 4th January, 1856 at Coxhoe Hill. Eleanor died 1859 and he married his third wife Hannah in 1860. Continue to Mark Scott's family sheet.

Kelloe Church

Eleanor Taylor Born circa 1835, daughter of George Taylor a colliery overman. She married Mark Scott (a widower with one child, Thomas) on 26th March, 1855 at the Register Office, Durham and George was born 4th January, 1856 at Coxhoe Hill, Co. Durham. Eleanor died, aged only 24, and was buried on 23rd October, 1859 at St. Helen's Church, Kelloe, Co. Durham.

Front Street, Witton Gilbert

Ann Mason Born 18th November, 1868 at Oakenshaw, Brancepeth, Co. Durham, she was known as Annie. She spend her childhood in different places in the Durham coalfield, as her father moved to find work. She married George Scott at the Register Office, Durham on 15th September, 1888 and they had five children: Mark born 12th December, 1888 at Cornforth; George born 14th September, 1890 at Witton Gilbert; John William (Jack) born 8th September, 1892 at Witton Gilbert; Rosina (Rose) born 3rd April, 1897 at Etherley Moor; and Violet (Vi) born 14th January, 1901 at Etherley Moor. They moved to Horden in the early 1900s when Horden colliery was sunk, where George and his three sons found work. She was described by my father as a practical, sensible person. She died on 22nd February, 1949 at her daughter's house in Hesledon of a cerebral thrombosis.

Hetton Church

George Mason Born 4th February, 1839 at Hetton le Hole, Co. Durham, George became a coal miner like his father. He married Ellen Moody 3rd December, 1860 at St. Helen's Church, Kelloe, Co. Durham and they had: John William born 1861 at Cassop; Mary born about 1862 Hetton le Hole; Isabella (Bella) born 1865 at Hetton le Hole; Ann (Annie) born 1868 at Oakenshaw; Hedley born 1870 at Nettleworth; Mary (Polly) born about 1873; Jane (Jenny) born about 1875 at Cassop; Ellen (Nelly) born about 1877 at Seghill; Hannah born 1880 at Cockfield; and Margaret (Maggie) born 1883 at Cockfield. They moved about the Durham coalfield in search of work, several of the children moving to Horden in the early 1900s with their husbands/wives for work at the new colliery. Ellen Moody Born 19th May, 1840 at Haswell, Co. Durham, youngest daughter of John Moody a blacksmith who moved about the Durham coalfield in search of work. She married George Mason 3rd December, 1860 at St. Helen's Church, Kelloe, Co. Durham and they had: John William born 1861 at Cassop; Mary born about 1862 Hetton le Hole; Isabella (Bella) born 1865 at Hetton le Hole; Ann (Annie) born 1868 at Oakenshaw; Hedley born 1870 at Nettleworth; Mary (Polly) born about 1873; Jane (Jenny) born about 1875 at Cassop; Ellen (Nelly) born about 1877 at Seghill; Hannah born 1880 at Cockfield; and Margaret (Maggie) born 1883 at Cockfield. My grandmother once told me she remembers being taken to visit as a young child and she was a very large lady. Continue to Ellen Moody's family sheet.
